What is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic Therapy is a holistic approach to healing that connects the mind and body, recognizing that emotional experiences are not only processed cognitively but also stored physically. Rooted in the understanding that trauma, stress and emotional pain can live in the body, Somatic Therapy uses body-based practices—such as breathwork, movement, visualization and mindfulness—to help clients release tension, access deeper emotional awareness and restore a sense of safety and regulation. This form of therapy supports healing by gently guiding individuals to tune into their bodily sensations and internal experiences, fostering a greater connection to themselves and promoting emotional, mental, and physical well-being.
Somatic EMDR therapy is an integrative approach that combines Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with body-based (somatic) techniques to help people heal from trauma and distress. While traditional EMDR focuses on reprocessing difficult memories through guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, somatic EMDR also pays close attention to how those experiences are held in the body. Clients are gently guided to notice physical sensations, tension patterns, and nervous system responses as part of the healing process.
By working with both mind and body, somatic EMDR can help release stored stress, regulate the nervous system, and create a deeper sense of safety and resilience. This approach is especially helpful for individuals who feel “stuck,” overwhelmed, or disconnected, as it supports healing not just through talking, but through direct, embodied experience.
What does trauma-informed mean?
Being a trauma-informed counsellor means approaching each client with an understanding of how trauma can impact the body, mind, emotions, and behaviours. It involves creating a safe, supportive, and empowering environment where clients feel seen, heard, and respected. A trauma-informed approach recognizes the widespread effects of trauma and prioritizes trust, choice, collaboration, and safety in the therapeutic relationship. It also means working at a pace that feels right for the client, being attuned to signs of dysregulation, and integrating practices that support nervous system regulation and healing. This approach honours the resilience of each person and supports their journey toward healing with compassion and care.
